The booms and jibs of cranes used in the Port of Bayonne were fitted with lifelines in 2006 in order to reduce the risk of falling when moving around at height to carry out maintenance and servicing. The technical solution used is a fall-prevention device using a cable and self-blocking trolley system (type Cabloc) that allows people to climb on this equipment in safety.
Each port employee has been equipped with an individual fall-prevention protection kit that includes 1 harness with chest and back attachments, a rope with energy absorber, 3 snap hooks and a strap.
In order that this material be used correctly and in optimal conditions, all of the port employees attended a training programme that covered both the theory and in situ practice.
Finally in order to meet current statutory requirements concerning the periodic checking of this individual protection, a person attended an Inspector training programme. This equipment is therefore inspected in-house on an annual basis.
