In the 20th century, new factors and a diversity of initiatives and implementations placed Bayonne 9th on the list of the busiest French ports with traffic over 4 million metric tons at the end of the century. Sulphur from Lacq, maize from the South-West of France, chemical products and hydrocarbons on the one hand, scrap metal and steel billets for the Arcelor group electric steelworks on the other, are all products that bear witness to the port’s dynamism. Thanks to major fitting out operations boats are more easily accommodated : the north embankment (1966), the south embankment (1977) and the new embankment (2000) should allow 20,000-metric ton vessels to enter.

At the beginning of this millennium the industrial and commercial port now spreads over 4 Adour estuary communities : Bayonne, Anglet, Bourau (in the Pyrénées Atlantiques region) and Tarnos (in the Landes region).
With the 800 people whose employment is directly linked to the Port and 3,000 related jobs, the Port continues to participate in the history and economy of Bayonne and its region.
